Bell and Shriner then thrashed out the brilliance in Hash Pipe, which obviously brought back memories of university parties for more than just me: Lots of warm yellow and orange lights helped make that tune a turnaround point in the first half, with the crowd visibly rising in energy. Perhaps it was jetlag or just too long a time away from Australia because while introducing Island in the Sun, he had to ask the audience if our fair continent was indeed an island. Wearing a plaid shirt and brown corduroy trousers, Cuomo moved the time machine back through Perfect Situation and Beverly Hills from 2005's Make Believe, and into 2002's Maladroit with Dope Nose, which got the crowd moving again with its “Oh-oh-oh-oh” chorus line.Ĭuomo kept his audience interaction to a minimum, which was a bit of a shame because he still sounded like an awkward teenager. (Their only flashy bit of kit was a large illuminated “W”.) Embracing the idea of being happy the way you are, its chunky riff thudded away happily while its clever lyrics were a great way for Cuomo to introduce the rest of the band – bassist Scott Shriner, drummer Patrick Wilson and guitarist Brian Bell.Ĭuomo dropped his guitar for Troublemaker in order to run around the minimalist set, which gave the impression the band had just turned up in a warehouse with their stacks and plugged in a lighting rig.

Their second was my personal favourite of recent years: Pork and Beans from 2008's The Red Album. Their concert was a nostalgia fest for '90s-era oddballs and malcontents that saw charismatic frontman Rivers Cuomo declare we were all in a time machine, and would start in 2009 and go back to 1994, with the second act devoted entirely to their debut The Blue Album.Īs someone tweeted: “Weezer getting all of their shitty recent songs out of the way early? I approve.” Now that's a tad harsh in my opinion, as their opening number – I Want You To from 2009's Raditude – is a catchy, upbeat rockabilly number that got the crowd bopping, if not thrashing, along.
